Generally, cars are divided into 10 different Vehicles Types. These names are given depending on the size and appearance of the vehicle. As I am giving this answer, I am reminding you that it would be very good for everyone to remember these names. Because now we have a situation where we need to use these names in many places in our daily life. But it’s a sad fact that many people don’t know that. (Many people don’t even know what type of car they have at home)
1. Hatchback
People generally have a misconception that this is a range of cheap cars. But this is a classification based on vehicle size only. The hatchback range ranges from the Rs 3 lakh Datson Redi-Go to the Rs 40 lakh Mini Cooper. But the small cars that the common people rely on the most are all included in the same category. Hatchback vehicles are generally less than 4 meters in length. Similarly, 4-5 seat vehicles will be the same. These vehicles will have three or five doors.
2. Sedan
Most luxury cars fall into the sedan category. The main attraction of sedan cars is that the ride comfort is much more than others. Also known as a saloon in some countries, these cars are mainly passenger vehicles with 2 rows of seats. The rear compartment seat will be designed in a way that is adequate for senior passengers. That means they will have all the facilities for two people in the second row with all the comforts to stretch their legs wide for long-distance journeys. Hence vehicles are generally longer. A section of the car, usually the trunk or boot, is markedly divided from the seat to save cargo space.
From the 4.4 meters long Skoda Rapid priced at Rs 8.6 lakh to the 5.7-meter-long Rolls Royce Phantom III priced at Rs 10 crore, the same segment is sold in India.
3. SUV/MUV
Sports Utility Vehicle – Multi Utility Vehicle. SUV is the most popular vehicle segment today. Because many companies have managed to make SUVs at a price that the common man can afford. Also, people started finding SUVs to be more convenient as they came in larger sizes. More ground clearance, power, size and off-road capability have made SUVs more popular.
Unlike SUVs, MUV cars have the engine/performance of normal cars. But nothing can be done off-road on bad roads. But like SUVs, there will be plenty of sizes. Toyota Innova and Maruthi Ertiga, which are the most popular vehicles for long-distance travel for 7-8 people at a time, belong to the MUV category. The recently launched Kia Carnival is the largest MUV with 9 seats.
4. Compact Sedan
Regular sedan cars are popular but many people cannot afford them due to their high price. It was at that time that compact sedans, less expensive vehicles less than 4 meters in length, came. Although they do not have the same length as the sedan, most of them have the same engine and facilities as the sedan cars. The existing BS6 vehicles are Tata Tigor, Hyundai Aura, Ford Aspire, Maruthi Dezire and Honda Amaze.
5. Coupe
Generally, sports segment cars of luxury cars come in the coupe segment. They usually have two seats in front and they have two doors. At the same time, even if there are two small seats (baby seats) in the second row, they do not have doors. Generally, sports cars are given only 2 doors as safety and dynamic are more required. Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porche, Maserati, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Nissan GTR, Aston Martin, Lexus, and Rolls Royce are currently selling various coupe cars in India. The prices of various models in India range from around Rs 70 lakh to Rs 5.5 crore.
6.Convertiblet/Cabriolet
Cars that can open and close the roof of the car completely with the help of a switch mechanism are called convertibles. This technology has been used in cars ranging from Mini Coopers to Rolls Royces. But these cars often cost more than the normal model of the same car. Due to the hot and dusty climate in India and people wanting more privacy, these types of cars are generally seen on the roads very rarely.
7. Station Wagon
An estate car, also called an estate or a station wagon, is a car body style built with a two-box design, a large cargo area, and a rear tailgate. The length will be about five meters. These types of cars are very few in India. Currently, only two vehicles are sold in this segment namely Volvo V 90 and Mercedes E Class All Terrain
8. Van/Minivan
Until some time ago, there were many vehicles of this type in the market. But later, many companies withdrew from the market probably because none of them became so popular. The Maruthi Omni, a minivan, was once one of the most popular vehicles in India. But today Maruthi Eeco is the only vehicle left in the BS6 category.
9. Truck
There are currently no BS6 vehicles available in India in the Truck category. BS6 version of vehicles like the most popular Izuzu V cross is coming soon. These types of vehicles can also be used off-road in bad conditions. Such vehicles have a box at the back like a lorry and can be loaded with goods. But like normal cars, there will be five seats in two rows. This is a vehicle range that is relied upon by people living in the hinterlands, those who have large-scale agriculture etc.
10. Crossover
An easy, and typical, meaning of a crossover would be that it is a car that combines the features of an SUV and a hatchback.
